How You Should Feel
A Poem Dedicated to Highly Sensitive People 🤲
Good morning, Beautiful People.
If you’re in Canada, you might be waking up on a Tuesday after enjoying the “August Long Weekend”.
Known as Simcoe Day here in Ontario, other Canadian provinces use various names for this mid-summer long weekend. Whatever you call it, if you were lucky enough to celebrate a long weekend in your province, state, or territory, I hope it was relaxing and joyful.
As my wonderous art and yoga retreat week slips further and further from memory, I want to share one of the poems I wrote while attending that joyous and special place. As an HSP, I have a feeling it will click for you.

How You Should Feel
It’s not too hot
It doesn’t hurt
It’s not too loud
Stop fidgeting with your shirt
—
You’re fine. Don’t worry.
Dismiss any concerns
Your feelings don’t matter
Your trauma’s not earned
—
Stop covering your ears
The sound is just fine
It’s quiet enough for us
Just sit down and unwind
—
The room is full of people
Isn’t it just grand?
The conversations are flowing
Wave to the boys in the band
—
Stop complaining! It’s fun!
We don’t need to leave
Your desire for freedom?
It doesn’t meet our needs
—
So shut up. Sit down.
Fit in and stop talking
Your desires, your feelings…
Well, they’re just not important
—
Keep smiling my dear
It’s really not a big deal
We’ll be the first to inform you
Just how you should feel.

Let me know if this poem resonates with you.
Until Next Time, HSP — Stay Real.
